Ukrainian Christmas Celebration Cossack Style (SecureDating.com)

Ukrainian and Russian Dating - Christmas

It is January again – a time of winter holidays, cheer and snow. One of those holidays is the Orthodox Christmas that is traditionally celebrated on the 6th of January in Ukraine, Russia and other former Soviet countries. Today it is a quiet, family holiday which most people spend at home relaxing after the wild New Year parties. But hot Ukrainian girls have a tough ancestry – the cossacks, and during the times of Zaporizhian Sich Christmas was considered one of the most important and respected days of the year. Thus it was celebrated on much bigger scale.

The church was playing the central role in the cossack society, so it comes at no surprise that it was also the centre of Christmas celebrations. Early in the morning on the 6th of January all Zaporozhians would put their best cloths on, picked up their best arms and gathered at the square in front of the church. Each kuren (an administrative unit – several hundreds of cossacks) would stand together under their own flag. The banners were freshly repainted for this occasion. And no matter how cold it would get – the cossacks would stand with bare heads till the end of the church service.

At the end of the ceremony the priests would leave the church and walk towards Dnepr, followed by the cossacks. There another service would take place. Every time a priest would submerge the cross under the water, the cossacks would fire their arms in the air.

During the whole week, following this ceremony, there would be a lot of music playing everywhere and the fireworks. The pyromancers were very elaborate at that time and could create different shapes and forms, including hetman’s initials.
