Saint Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia, located on the Neva river at the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. The city has a population of around 5 million people and is a major European cultural center. Throughout the history, the capital of Russia was moved back and forth between Saint Petersburg and Moscow and although Moscow has the title of the official capital now, Saint Petersburg is referred to as the “cultural capital” of Russia.

The city of Saint Petersburg was founded by one of the great Russian leaders, Peter the Great in May of 1703, however the Russian settlement was preceded by a Swedish fortress called Nyenskans. The place was of key importance to Russia’s being able to access Northern seas and the Baltic Sea in particular, which led to Russia’s capturing of the fortress and its replacement by a large city and sea port.

The city was built by conscripted peasants and thousands died due to harsh northern conditions. Constructions were conducted under great haste, since at the time Russia was at war with Sweden and fortifying the area quickly was of great importance. The whole city was constructed in a the matter of two-three years and in 1712, Peter the Great moves the capital from Moscow to Saint Petersburg.

Although the city was growing spontaneously during its first years, a development plan has been devised and Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond was appointed chief architect of the city. For the next year, the style of Petrine Baroque shaped appearance of most of the prominent structures in Saint Petersburg.

During the Soviet times, the city was renamed to Leningrad, after the leader of Russian revolution, Vladimir Lenin. The city was renamed back to Saint Petersburg in 1991, when the Soviet Union ceased to exist.

Using the metro for your daily commute will allow you to avoid those traffic jams and spend more time enjoying this wondrous city.
